Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease. Gums may bleed easily, look red or swollen, or feel tender. It can also be painless, so symptoms alone do not tell the whole story. A gum assessment helps clarify what is happening.

Treat the cause
At this stage, professional cleaning and consistent daily plaque removal can reverse the inflammation. Your hygienist can explain the areas that need attention and help you improve your brushing and cleaning between teeth. The plan depends on the examination, rather than on a cleaning label alone.

Review the response
Ask when your gums should be checked again and which changes to look for at home. Bring up any difficulty following the routine. If the assessment shows disease affecting deeper supporting tissues, the team will explain why periodontal disease therapy may be the more appropriate next step.
